"Cyber Awareness over festive season"

Everyone looks forward to the festive season. To fully relax & enjoy the holidays, it is important that one always stays alert as far as cyber activities are concerned.

Thieves, thugs & Hackers flourish during festive seasons,as they know their predators are as alert as usual.

So,it might be worthwhile to take following preventions to stay safe:

FINANCES
CREDIT/BANK CARDS

*Do not let anybody take your credit or bank card out of your site at anytime. It can easily be copied for details.

*Hold your hand over or properly cover the PIN-pad of a payment machine. Your PIN is 50% of what is required to empty your bank account. Your card is obviously the other 50%.
* Don't share CVV code to anyone else.

ATMs

*Do not insert you card in the card reader slot if it seems as if the slot has been tampered with. Also, if the card reader does not automatically feed your card, do not force your card into the slot. There might be a trap inserted in the slot that will capture your card to be removed later by thugs that planted the trap.

*Do cover the pad when you enter your PIN.It is the person behind you or small cameras, hidden closely, that might record your fingers entering the PIN.

*Do not accept any assistance from anybody behind you. Cards are swapped very easily without you noticing it. If you experience problems, take your card and leave.

Online banking

* Do not conduct online banking on any computer you do not trust 100%. It must have an up-to-date malware protection system running on it.

* Do not respond to any email or SMS that seemingly originate from your bank.

* Choose a strong (difficult to guess) password and keep it secret.

* Limit the 'available' funds on your banking profile as far as possible.

* Must use the websites that are running on HTTP's only.

SOCIAL MEDIA

* Do not 'advertise' that you will be away from home, where you are going and for how long.

* Your holiday photos and commentary might also alert others that your whole family is away from home. Thus, be careful what you post.

* Do not meet a new online 'friend' without taking somebody with. Always meet in a public place, like a mall, and never a quiet, lonely place.

PARENTS

* Ensure that you or your children do not 'advertise' that you will be away on holiday and for how long.

* Try to establish if your child has made new online 'friends' and whether he/she plans to meet this friend. If so, do ensure that an adult goes along the first time and that the meeting is in a public place.

* Monitor the general traits of your child's online habits during the holiday. If it changes suddenly, it might be a sign of cyber bullying taking place.

These few points might help you to ensure that no nasty surprises are experienced during the festive season.
